My husband and I were able to make a quick trip to Costa Rica last fall, using Hyatt points to stay at the Andaz Papagayo Resort.  We have always wanted to go to Costa Rica, but between work and kid commitments, we could never get our schedules to work.

Do you Like to Cruise?

Do you like to cruise?  I generally find that folks either love it or hate it.  Most of my family really like to cruise, but my husband only goes because I force him!  Here’s the thing – how else can you visit a variety of different places but only have to unpack once? For me, cruising gives me an opportunity to see if I really like a port enough to go back for a longer vacation.

Quick Trip to Austin, Texas

March 29, 2017 |

I had to visit Austin last week for business, which happens every once in a while since my main client is there.  It also gave me a chance to see Kid #1 and his fiance (Kid #1.5?) and Kid #2.  It was booked kind of last minute, but I was able to get a room using my Hyatt points and was upgraded to a Sweet Suite at the Hyatt Regency on Lady Bird Lake.

Kid #3 and I were able to head to Disneyland while she was on Spring Break from the University of Mississippi.  The weather was perfect and the crowds were out in droves, but we had a wonderful time on our short trip. Despite the crowds, we were able to ride all of the rides we wanted to ride and also had time to meet some Princesses!

One reason my husband and I like to visit Hawaii in January/February is for whale sightings.  Whales!  They are magnificent!  Every morning, we watched whales breaching while we had breakfast on our lanai.  My understanding is that Maui is probably better for spotting whales, but we saw plenty during our time on Kauai.

Kauai – my happy place

We arrived on Kauai safe and sound to cloudy skies and crazy wind!  Winds are gusting over 30 miles per hour, which is not the norm.  While the surfers may like it, we’ve seen electricity poles snapped in half and the power has been flickering on and off.  But, I’m still on Kauai and I couldn’t be happier.

Haleakala Summit on Maui is a must-do if you are planning a trip to the island.  Most people like to get up at 3:00 in the morning and make the trek to the Summit to see the sunrise, which under most weather conditions, is pretty spectacular, aside from getting up at 3:00 in the morning and hanging out with thousands of your closest friends.

One of our favorite things to do while on any of the Hawaiian islands is to go snorkeling, either from the beach or by boat. From Maui, you have access to the Molokini Crater, which is one of only three volcanic calderas in the world.

Last summer, to celebrate Kid #3’s high school graduation, my family spent a week on Maui.  And by family, I mean 14 of us – my parents, my siblings, their kids, my kids….you get the picture.  Traveling with family in such a large group is not for the faint of heart. Let’s just say I needed a vacation from that vacation and we’ll leave it at that.
